1. Modes: Instant Worlds From One Scale Change
Modes are the fastest way to paint a setting. Each mode is just a rotation of the major scale, but each carries a distinct emotional color that game composers exploit constantly:

2. Leitmotif: Characters as Melodies
A leitmotif is a short musical idea attached to a character, place, object, or concept. Games inherited the technique from opera and film, but took it further: because players spend dozens of hours in a world, motifs can evolve across an entire soundtrack. A hero’s theme might appear as a fragile music-box melody in a flashback, a full orchestral statement in the finale, and a broken, minor-key fragment after a story twist.
How to write one: keep it short (3–7 notes), rhythmically distinctive, and simple enough to survive being re-harmonized, re-orchestrated, and transposed. If your motif still reads as itself when played slowly on a solo flute, it’s strong.
3. Ostinato: The Engine of Momentum
An ostinato is a repeating pattern — and it is the workhorse of game music. Loop-based gameplay music needs momentum without constant melodic demand on the player’s attention, and ostinatos deliver exactly that: driving string rhythms in action tracks, arpeggiated synths in sci-fi exploration, bass patterns in puzzle games.
Ostinatos also solve a practical problem: they layer beautifully. A rhythmic string ostinato can sit under a combat layer, then drop out for exploration while the harmony continues — the backbone of adaptive music systems.
4. Pedal Tones and Drones: Tension From Standing Still
Hold one bass note while harmonies shift above it and you create instant suspense — the ear keeps waiting for the bass to move. Horror and stealth games live on this technique: a low drone with dissonant strings floating above it is practically a genre convention. Pedal tones also glue loops together, because a static bass makes the loop point feel less like a restart.
5. Modal Interchange: Borrowed Chords, Borrowed Emotions
Modal interchange means borrowing chords from the parallel minor (or major) key. The most famous example in game music: in a major key, using the ♭VI and ♭VII chords (in C major: A♭ major and B♭ major). This progression is so associated with heroism and adventure that it’s sometimes called the “epic” progression — you’ll hear it behind countless triumphant themes. One borrowed chord can turn a plain major loop into something that feels legendary.
6. Deliberately Unresolved Endings
A pop song resolves; a game loop must not — at least not fully. If a track ends on a satisfying perfect cadence, the loop restart feels like a hard cut. Game composers instead end phrases on dominant chords, suspended chords, or melodies that hang on the 2nd or 5th scale degree, so the music leans forward into its own beginning. When you write loops, compose the ending and the beginning as one continuous gesture.
7. Instrumentation as a Theory Choice
In game music, orchestration does theory’s job. The same four chords read as “cozy village” on accordion and acoustic guitar, “dystopian megacity” on detuned synths, and “ancient temple” on choir and frame drum. How to Train This Into Your Ear
- Pick three favorite game tracks. Loop each and write down: mode, bass behavior, repeating patterns, and where the harmony refuses to resolve.
- Transcribe one 8-bar section by ear — notation software or your DAW piano roll both work.
